Blast from the past : 2009 Interview with Pascal & Pearce

pascal-pearce

3 years ago, when R20 still got you a Barcelo's double deal, 'work' was something old people did and the Soccer World Cup was on the tip of everyone's tongue, we sat down with 2 up and coming DJ/producers as they started to tickle the ear drums of Cape Town's electronic music scene...

Pascal & Pearce

little more than 1000 days later, a double album collaborating with the cream of South Africa's musical talent and a HD TV Documentary to boot, the duo have quite literally blown up, scintilating dancefloors around the country with their unique musical productions, high energy performances and passion for Liverpool (what the...?).

What is startling is the progression that these two have made as artists, but also in the type of sound they now create compared to 2009.

And what better way than to look back on their words from 2009 to truly see the change...

But before we do that, a few words from Mr Pearce himself... the 2012 version....

hahaha, wow we said 'bouncy' quite a lot... and mystical. Not cool. I was hoping i'd make it to the end of the article without reading the word 'Fidget', but alas. Damn you past, future for the win! I miss CTA parties, they were the heat. And I still want to be a squirrel!

Gee Dave, who knows, maybe in 3 years that squirel thing can be arranged. Stick to the beats for us so long though....

P & P.... 2009...

First of all, the age old question, would you rather be a pirate or an outlaw?
Pearce: Definately a pirate. I want gold and treasure, and I want to shout yyaarr at people. Just like orlando bloom.
Pascal: Hahaha, me to, a Pirate without a doubt!
What inspired each of you to get into the music scene
Pascal: I love music, especially, well produced music. Its the best when you jaming to a track that makes life only so much better. What myself and Dave are trying to do is exactly that! Besides, who doesnt want to be a real RocknRolla:)?
Pearce: I've been into music for ages, but started off playing guitar and drums in punk bands. I studied contemporary music in Jozi, but it was only when i moved to Cape Town to study audio engineering that i truly discovered the wobble-wobble love of electro! Then I met Pasci, and the rest is history.
When did Pascal & Pearce join forces and what inspired the transition?
P&P: We met in Feburary 2007, through mutual friends. Pasci had already been Djaying for years playing at all sorts of crazy parties, and I'd been producing for a few years, so peeps thought we should try make some tracks together. The first one was a banger, so we just kept going :)
Describe the sound that you guys are throwing out?
P&P: Our sound is fresh, filthy, banging plus all out wobble, and should be played on a system that can handle the heat!
Most of the tracks you play in your sets are actually produced by you guys, tell us more about the process of creating your own music!
Pearce: We kind of go through phases with our production, sometimes we just sit down and pump out tracks, and sometimes we focus on one track for like three weeks! The first track we released we did from start to finish in five hours.
Pascal: But we've released a few originals now through Grooved Music on beatport, so we're starting to focus on our productions seriously. We're re-releasing a track next month with a remix pack, and we've got lots of banging new tracks in the pipelines though so watch this space!
What kind of music are you guys influenced by? Any artists in particular?
Pearce: When i studied music i was exposed to alot of styles, which still helps influence the music we make. Brazilian rythyms and percussion sound sick with dirty electro! But i find these days its easist to get inspired by fresh bouncy electro, it's mystical!
Pascal: Production wise, i'm loving Miles Dyson, John Dahlback, Bass Kleph, and Stupid Fresh - those guys are cooking it oversees. But there are just too many to name, the amount of good electro at the moment is just inspirational!
P&P has played at every Cape Town Alive party, in your guys opinion why have Cape Town Alive parties been so successful?
Pearce: Cape Town Alive parties are always sick parties to play at! They always put the emphasis on the decor and the music, the two most important things for a succesful party. They look after their Djays, and let us play what we want to play!
Pascal: That's always very important, no DJ wants to be restriced to what style of music he has to play. We decide what the people want to hear!
Pearce: And the crowd at CTA parties are always great! The Lumo parties especially, the whole night it was just a dancefloor packed with loose, glowing people going crazy, what could be better?
What is the biggest party P&P have played at?
Pascal: The most people we ever played to was probably about 5,500 at the Wavehouse in Umhlanga, when we played after DJ Fresh and Euphonik last year on Matric Rage. But the biggest gig for us to play was probably Earthdance last year - it was a milestone gig. When we first started producing music together we said that one day we'd get to play our own tracks at Earthdance, and just over a year later we got to do that. It was mystical!
Pearce: Like crystals. Haha!
What are your favourite parties to play at?
Pearce: CTA parties are always cool, Looney Tunez, Arcade, Get Dumb, they're all sick! But I guess the crowds at all those parties just want to get loose and jam, so i guess thats really what makes a cool party.
If you could choose one artist to play back to back with, who would it be and where?
P&P: Miles Dyson vs Pascal & Pearce @ SPACE Ibiza, coming soon :)
Tell us about the latest song you guys are making?
Pascal: At the moment we've just finished a bootleg, its of the Knight Rider theme song. I rate its' one of our best!
Pearce: Yeah we spent ages on this song, just fine tuning it and tweaking it. But its a really bouncy track, definately one for the D-floor! Download it if you want a sneak preview of the next CTA party :)
Ok, you can both morph into either a land animal, a sea animal, or an air animal at will - which animals do you choose?
Pascal: Blue Shark for sea, without a doubt a Lyger (Lion & Tiger) for land, oh yeah. And I suppose one of the crazy snow eagles that can pick up reindeer.
Pearce: Definately an Orangutan for land, they're the best. A penguin for sea, although i guess it's a bird. But whatever, penguins are awesome. And for air animal... do flying squirrels count?
Which local  DJ’s do you guys think are making some cool music at the moment?
Pascal: As far as production is concerned, I think Ryan Murgatroyd, Guy Herman and Kyle Watson are leading the pack for local electro. But SA is just pushing out so many quality producers at the moment, it's really good for SA from an international viewpoint!
Pearce: Lil'Phil, Fidget Thugs, Nick Supply, Nesono, they're all making some amazing tracks at the moment.
Where can people get hold of your tracks?
Pascal: We've had a few tracks released that you can buy on beatport.com and a handful of other sites, support local music!
Pearce: Or else you can listen to most of our tracks on our Facebook artists page, just search Pascal & Pearce in Facebook!

P&P have gained some awesome, well deserved exposure in JHB as residents for Looney Tunez. Doing it for the love of the music.. so rare in an industry where money and ego reigns supreme.

Nice one guys smilies/wink.gif
