Smoking during pregnancy & children's television have a lot more in common than you think. The bastard child of both, Mey marries his keen sense of soul & groove with everything backbeat.
It gets a bit much watching DJ’s playing CD's after a while, you seem to crave something more. Watching Mey's sets, him singing, dancing (but not in that choreographed kinda way) and mixing, you realise this isn’t just another generic DJ, this is a passionate artist at work. It is only a matter of time until he establishes himself as a household name on the international stage. Locally, in Cape Town at least, his slower sound and penchant for a little strangeness hints at a musical taste not common amongst his peers.
The first artist on the Zets to the World's management roster, I've asked Mey a few questions...
CTA: Would you rather be a pirate or outlaw?
Mey A pirate; you get to wear velvet & gold jewelry & live on seafood, I think.
CTA: Describe your sound...
Mey Primarily, Im a vocalist. I make and play everything from electronic soul through to deep disco, house and the groovier side of techno; as long as its got more Bossa and Brooklyn as opposed to the more rigid, harder stuff.
CTA: What projects are you busy with at the moment?
Mey There are a bunch; I am just trying to get some relevant releases that make in-roads in underground scenes abroad, especially in the deeper & stranger side of house/techno. There are studio projects with Emerson Todd (Cocoon, Get Physical), JohnJon (Suol), Floyd Lavine (Live Tech Rebelz) and two new live outfits with Ivan Turanjanin (Killer Robot) and Crazy White Boy (Soul Candi). An older live disco/deep house project with The Bang Collective (Kolour, Lost My Dog) is currently on ice as we regroup for a commercial strategy but we are still releasing abroad and doing some things Im really proud of. Oh, and playing some of whatever I love wherever people let me of course.
CTA: Who, locally and internationally, would you like to work with?
Mey Locally, Richard Brokensha of Isochronous/Kid of Doom, 7ft Soundsystem, Culoe De Song, Trompies, Big Nuz and any of the 340ml crew. Internationally, I'd smile and probably vomit too at an opportunity with any of the following: Danger Mouse, Caribou, Lindstrom, Kate Bush, Andre 3000, Matthew Herbert, Nicolas Jaar, no man, too many.
CTA: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Mey Hmmm, I'm not sure. Hanging in a fridge? I definitely want to visit Laos; South America too for some Shamanic ceremony, you know. But mostly just earn artistic respect from & my place amidst the artists I love and respect.
CTA: Any advice for anyone who cares to listen?
Mey Um, Love your mother. Buy yourself a macbook. Get Ableton Live. Call a photographer friend, a designer friend and a stylist and go claim that 15 minutes Warhol warned us about. Read less about Philosophy; all that bullshit about reason, clarity and truth will only confuse you further. Oh, and fight the urge to paraphrase Baz Lurhman.
