CapeTownAlive recently had the pleasure of picking the brain of Earthling.

A true psytrance legend and indeed the main attraction @ this weekends Alien Safari in Cape Town.

We chat about growing up in Ibiza, major festivals worldwide and inspiring artists on the current trance scene.

CTA: As is CapeTownAlive tradition, we start off with our classic icebreaker... Would you rather be a Pirate or an Outlaw?

Earthling: outlaw. ; )

CTA: You were born and grew up in Ibiza... When did you first get into the trance scene and which was the first party that you ever went to?

Earthling: I started getting involved in making parties in Ibiza around 1991, an that time Psychedelic Trance didn’t even really exist, but it quickly became the staple diet of the outdoor parties. I went to my first fullmoon party in Ibiza in 1989 . a lot of beards and bongos is all I can remember…

CTA: You’ve been on the forefront of the PsyTrance music scene for a while, how has the scene changed and where do you think its heading?

Earthling: Well, it just gets better and better….in 10 years its grown into a global network . People love it all over the world, which is a fine achievement for any musical style. The attendance at parties in some countries in skyrocketing .. one night parties of 20,000 people for example…
Where its heading is a very good question indeed!
I hope the production styles and synth programming techniques of psychedelic trance will filter through into more mainstream music and movies .

CTA: Being an International Superstar you have played many major festivals world wide... Does any single party stand out to you as your best ever?

Earthling: Alien Safari in South Africa of course !

CTA: Well played... And If you could play to any crowd, in any place of the world, where would it be?

Earthling: Alien Safari in South Africa ; )

CTA: Being behind the decks in front of thousands of people must be an amazing experience, what is the craziest thing that you have seen while playing at a party?

Earthling: Hahaha… wow.. probably the dancefloor when I played the last day at Boom Festival 2006, just because of the sheer magnitude of the freakage !

CTA: Which artists are inspiring you at the moment?

Earthling: At the moment : Tron, Braniac, Chromatone, Laughing Buddha, Flip Flop, Zen Mechanix, Headroom, GMS, Deedrah, Chrome Angels, Biogenesis, Absolum, Shpongle, Younger Brother, Tipper, Bluetech, Jviewz,…..

CTA: Now to put you on the spot imagine this scenario, you are standing behind the decks looking at the perfect crowd... Its the last song you will ever play... What does Earthling pull out his bag of tricks?

Earthling: The Beast by Infernal Machine i reckon…It’s a fabulous track.

CTA: So what can the Cape Town Dance Floor expect from Earthling? How would you describe your current sound?

Earthling: deeply psychedelic, aggressively friendly, full on ,dance music that’s neither dark nor fluffy.
