Of course her designs can be judged on their unoriginality. Sure fashion and design is always being reinvented and you can't always be 100% orginal, but to almost directly copy a current designer is not what its all about. I felt so frustrated seeing Walters' designs all over an issue of Elle magazine (especially when I glanced at the image and was excited to see Backlund's work in a local mag...oh wait). This country needs to give credit to innovative designers, not more designers who just follow the crowd.

@ Tina Rosalie, I also noticed the photoshoot was so similar to Backlund's, in the style, the poses etc.
@ Bevan Booysen, a quote that I read of hers, describing her collection, was also very similar to the way Backlund describes her work.

I'm a big fan of Sandra Backlund, so forgive me for being defensive. I'm also a 4th year fashion student and feel offended by all the credit given to this unoriginal work. It just doesn't seem right to me.

Hopefully Jade Walters will develop her own voice as a young designer and grow into her personal style.

My comments about the photoshoot were in response to what Tina Rosalie said, "Even the photoshoot she did is the same as one of Backlund`s". - natalie

hi natalie

thanks for your comments. i think there is some confusion as i took the photos that are posted above. with my average digital at the design expo. it was by no means a photo shoot as posted earlier on.

i have to agree and say that although her work may not be 100% original, it is really difficult to produce something nowadays that is 100% original. we are bombarded everyday with new styles etc from millions of designers all over the world, making it extremely difficult to think of something "new" shall we say.

other than that i still believe that her work is beautiful and should be appreciated - Bo Bissict

I think that originality is not the only criteria that art and design can be judged on. I have never seen anything like this, especially not in South Africa and just because something similar has been done before, it doesn't mean that Jade's work is any less creditable. After all, what is truly 100% unique and original?

And as far as the photoshoot is concerned, I took the photos and I hadn't seen any of Sandra Backlund's work up until today, nevermind that shoot in particular. - natalie

I`ll have to agree with Princess. There is nothing original about this designers work. Some of the pieces are directly copied from Sandra Backlund`s designs. Even the photoshoot she did is the same as one of Backlund`s. I do not see how this work can be described as cutting edge and African when it is blatantly copied from another desingner`s work. - Tina Rosalie

Princess, i tend to differ on your views on Jade Walters, I was at the Indaba and if you just take the time to read Jades Prelude you will understand what a magnificent piece of work this fourth year student fashioned - her style is different to Sandra's, her shapes are unique, her African Concept is totally different to what anyone has seen on this continent. She can only grow. So to Jade i say, you are doing us proud keep doing what you do.

hey princess. thanks for that tip. i wont lie i really liked Miss Walters designs and i am somewhat disappointing to see how similar they are to the Sandra Backlund.

I can only hope that this is purely coincidental but i would invite Jade Walters to comment on this statement.

once again thanks for the info princess - Bo Bissict

This designer has blatantly copied the work of Sandra Backlund. I was so disappointed to see such unoriginal work in the Emerging Talent section of the Design Indaba.
