Cape Town weather in winter is influenced by the movement of cold fronts and polar depressions to the south which generate stormy gusty conditions and gale force northerly winds. Heavy soaking rain is often a characteristic of these conditions. In the past our winter season was a lot colder and wetter, but the effect of the ongoing climatic change cycle on the weather in recent years has meant that winters have become milder, and Cape Town often experiences sunny and pleasant winter days. Such conditions are ideal for travellers who choose to visit the Cape during the generally less crowded 'off' season in Spring and from April when transport and accommodation is cheaper, and general expenses less. The winter months June - August provide Cape Town weather conditions ranging from dry and warm to wet and cold. Temperatures generally range from 2 – 20°c and Capetonians experience short days with late sunrises and early sunsets.
Shark Diving

1 With Shark Cage Diving being most popular in the winter months, and having the best chances of seeing a shark in this period, its a definate must for this winter! Shark Cage Diving is one of the most popular and sought after experiences that Cape Town has to offer. With all diving apparatus included in the fee and no prior diving experience required, this unique experience is open to anyone. The dive will bring you into one on one contact with the Great White Shark, with only a reinforced cage seperating you from this magnificent creature.

Boland Kelder’s Merlot was crowned SA Young Wine of the year 2008 and walked away with the coveted General Smuts Trophy. (See picture)

This title is the highest achievable accolade for a young wine in this competition. According to Bernard Smuts, the winemaker responsible for the winning wine, the Merlot showed award-winning potential even before the completion of fermentation with its “audacious berry flavours and well-balanced tannin structure.”

The Aliens Have Landed...

American film-maker Randall Nickerson is in Cape Town this week seeking inspiration for a documentary he is putting together about a UFO sighting in Zimbabwe in 1994.

During morning break on September 14 of that year, 62 schoolchildren between the ages of eight and 12 saw a strange craft land 150 metres from the Ariel School in Ruwa, from which two small beings emerged which were described as having "big eyes like rugby balls".

The children's individual descriptions of the phenomenon were so similar that news of the sighting spread around the globe.

'This is a story the world needs to see. Personally, I think it's moving'

Nickerson was approached with footage taken by the late Pulitzer Prize-winning Professor John Mack, who travelled to Zimbabwe to interview the children after the event.

Nickerson said: "This is a story the world needs to see. Personally, I think it's moving. I've found hundreds, if not thousands, of people who believe it and couldn't find anyone who didn't. It blew my mind when I saw it."
