At first there was nothing, not like not much, but really not anything. Somehow from this desolation something came about which pissed this nothing off and in a few seconds there was a shit load, thousands of light years worth of stuff. Then to cut a long story, Hydrogen, Helium and Lithium all did shit to create other shit, a world arrived, an earth; maybe a few hundred other earth like spheres that we may or may never find.
Then on this earth place some hairy, almost brainless being must have at first taken a hard object, struck it on another object of which he would not have known the name of, or even contemplated naming and enjoyed the sound. This probably brought about a kind of giddiness in the being as he repeatedly struck the object producing a noise. So as he jived there in a scene reminiscent of a more modern, lumo-colour clad youth at an 'outdoor music fest' in the cederberg; the being had inadvertently discovered the foundations of music. From here progress must have been slow such as the first movements of life in the ever expanding universe. Fast forward a few thousand years and the internet has done for the music industry what that something did to the nothing a long time ago. There is now an ever expanding amount of material out there, some which will never be found by you. This fact causes me a serious amount of worry, sleepless nights, moments of panic-stricken fear..............
So i call on all you good people out there in the music cosmos to help me source and locate some great music from the realms of nothingness that exist on the net. Please let me know what it is that you have discovered, what you are currently listening to and what to look out for. The more unknown and abstract the better.
First off i'll let you in on a great tool. Last.fm. This website scans all the music you have on your pc and then suggests other stuff you may like, allowing you to listen to its reccomendations. Great way to pass the hours at work.
Today i stumbled across 'Frightened Rabbit' and the 'Ra Ra Riot'. Sound very promising at first listen. 'Frightened Rabbit' are a Scottish quartet with a melodic country-folk sound. If you feel mesmerized every time you here the slow-purring lyrics of the National, give it a listen.
As i write I have just hit the 'Ra Ra Riot' playlist for the 3rd time and it's getting better each cycle. The lyrics may be a little melancholic, as a result of one of the band members drowning during the writing of this debut album, but they produce some magical indie tracks. With a hint of 'Vampire Weekend' influencing a few tracks, I think this 7 piece group may have something special. Start off with 'Ghosts under Rocks' and 'Can you Tell', great tracks. The album is called 'The Rhumb Line'
Well that's all for now, keep on hunting for the goodnes...
