Sections of the Western Cape are to be thrashed by another three cold fronts this week, and they are predicted to bring gale force winds, cold, mountain snow, heavy rain and massive seas.
Passing today, the first cold front brings with it rain and fresh westerly winds.
A more intense storm will swamp the entire province tomorrow and Wednesday, with winds gusting up to 65km/h from Lambert's Bay to Plettenberg Bay, and snow predicted in the mountains.
An SA Weather advisory says more than 50mm of rain is expected to fall over the west coast, winelands, city and western parts of the Overberg.
Popular weather website Windguru.com predicts that the second front, moving through on Wednesday, is likely to leave behind wild seas and 10m swells.
A third front will follow on Wednesday, after which conditions are likely to improve gradually.
Disaster management head Greg Pillay said his department would be on high alert.
He said people living in shacks in flood-prone areas could reduce their risks by raising their inside floor levels, digging drainage furrows around their homes and checking and repairing the waterproofing of their roofs.
People should also ensure their drainage systems weren't blocked, check for and clear dead wood in surrounding vegetation, move outdoor furniture inside, stay away from river banks and listen for weather warnings on the radio.
"They must avoid any contact with flood water, as it could be contaminated," he said.
In life-threatening emergencies, people should dial 107 from a landline or 021-480-7700 from a cellphone. For flood damage or blocked drains, they should call the technical operations centre at 0860-103-054.
