MixTape- Discovering Cape Towns Undiscoved Dj Talent

With an industry seeming to be going in all sorts of different directions, it seems that the concept of Mixtape is of greater value than what would be thought at first glance.

Mixtape

What is Mixtape you might ask?

The concept is Mixtape is fundamentally to showcase fresh, new and upcoming talent. The ‘bedroom DJ’ who merely needs his/ her foot in the door. The strength is this idea is in the fact that new talent need to validate their growth within the industry by being able to say that they have played alongside big names in the industry, whether it be Nick Supply, Dean Fuel or any other well-respected players.

Aspiring DJs are required to submit demo’s, or ‘Mixtapes’ with the aim of being able to play at the event. All demo’s received will undergo a tough criteria analysis, in terms of sound, mixing abilities, track selection and originality, in order to create a solid musical progression on the night.

The two winners chosen will each be awarded an hour set over the main set hours on Friday the 22nd January 2010 at The Bang Bang Club. They will be playing alongside two of the big players in the Cape Town music industry, Ryan Murgatroyd and Anthea, in one of Cape Town’s premium nightspots, and to a massive crowd of people. So, essentially, Mixtape is giving two passionate and ambitious DJ’s the chance to show off their knowledge and skill to a market that would otherwise know nothing of them. There can be no value placed on how great this opportunity is for these individuals.

Moreover, Mixtape is officially fully sponsored by South Africa’s fastest growing technical support company, Kilowatt AV. This company has played a massive role in some of the biggest events held across South Africa, including all of the Urban Wave parties, and have facilitated the production used for most of the biggest DJ’s in the world, when they have performed in South Africa. Mixtape is incredibly lucky to have such a sought after sponsor involved. Kilowatt will be supplying the event with a full rig, creating an environment for an incredible party and allowing the winners to be able to play on a state-of-the –art system. This really is going to be something to remember.

Not only that, but the chosen DJ’s will be able to go to the event dressed in Cape Town’s finest clothes, courtesy of POPPA TRUNKS, a boutique store in Cape Town run by two very well established clothing designers, Gren Forte and Ash Battle. POPPA TRUNKS have been kind enough to allow the DJ’s to choose any clothes from the store, thus making this whole experience for them that much more exciting, and stylish.

Another special mention must be giving to AVTI (Audio Visual Technologies Institution), a music school that has recently opened in Cape Town and is gaining fast-growing attention from many people in the industry as well as aspiring DJ’s and Music Producers. This school is quickly becoming one of the top music academies in the country and is run by well-established music producer Ryan Murgatroyd whose tracks have been on massive international labels including Ministry of Sound and CR2. AVTI have sponsored the event with two DJ courses, for two passionate individuals who would like to learn more about the skill of DJing. It is for these reasons that it had been decided that Ryan would be the perfect person to headline the night. For any aspiring DJ to say that they have played alongside Ryan Murgatroyd, is really something of high value.

Looks like is going to be one to remember!
