Is South Africa Ready to host the World Cup Football in 2010 ?

Kaizer chiefs fans try to take he law into their own hands and wreck Newlandw stadium on their way to the ref!

the Soccer fans that we are, the chance to see Kaizer Chiefs at Newlands was to good to be missed. As our first domestic game in Cape Town we were lucky to witness one of the marvels of South African Soccer as the passionate Chiefs fans let the drama get to them and vandalized Newlands in their disgust at the ref's performance.

On arrival the atmosphere was Electric and the seas of people that turned out to see the Chiefs in action was remarkable. The roads were jammed and tens of thousands of Vuvuzela armed fans streamed into Newlands to watch the festivity of the MTN 8 semi final.

Fans were excited and as the first half wore on a lack of opportunity for the away team Chiefs (who had ten times more fans than Ajax ct the home team) began to cause frustration in the stands.

The ref had a mare, and his first blunder was to blow the first half 6 minutes early (not including the extra 3 mins stoppage time making it 9 minutes too early!) and already he was in the fans bad books. As the second half commenced Chiefs started to attack more but without really looking to score. More frustration....until then the shit hit the fan....

The ref awarded a penalty to Ajax CT on the 60 minute mark and fans were not happy. Watching the game on TV later it was apparent that it was a penalty but without the luxury of replays in the stadium and the fact that the ref blew for the penalty rather late, fans felt cheated and vented by throwing vuvuzelas and the rest onto the field.

With each following attack or ref decision against Chiefs, fans would act out by throwing objects onto the feild and once they saw a close penalty call not go their way it was mental meltdown. queue 'mob mentality'...

Fans started ripping the seats off the Newlands Railway stand and began hauling them onto the field like frisbees, to such an extent that the game had to be stopped while they cleared the debris.

Another prime missed opportunity in the 92nd minute sealed Chiefs fate and as the final whistle sounded, Ajax subs (remember they are the HOME team) had to run onto the field to avoid the airborne objects.

it was not quite over yet as hundreds of Chiefs fans swarmed the tunnel waiting to get hold of the referee who had to be personally guarded on the field. He had to wait in the centre circle as the crowd chanted at him for 30 minutes until about 100 ADT security guards and policemen armed with mase cleared the area and got him safely off the fiel.

As a result SAFA has fined Chiefs R500 000 for their fans misconduct

Ajax took it in the second leg winning 4-3 on aggregate. what a spectacle of african football....

even better, Kaizer Chiefs have started a fans against hooliganism campaign, handing out awareness pamphlets at the games!!

about a week late if you ask me, but better late than never!
