What is this The Lanka Challenge 09’ thing every one is talking about?Posted by: dave ireton in Lifestyle on May 17, 2009 |

Are you looking to take break from the Cape Town Winter? Have you ever wanted to go exploring in an intriguing foreign country? Like full on Rambo in the jungle style? I would say there is almost a 100% guarantee that some one will find a treasure on this amazing trip i am about to tell you about. So if you are feeling like life is getting a little bit too repetitive, and something crazy and spontaneous will fix this rut then read on.
The Lanka Challenge 2009 will see intrepid travelers from around the world traverse the spicy island of Sri Lanka from the 5th-15th September 2009, in one of the funkiest modes of transport invented by man; the humble Auto Rickshaw. This three - wheeled mean machine will become your best companion as you compete in a "master of disaster" challenge through mountains, rainforests, coastal villages and bustling cities, not to mention some of the most breathtaking scenery you will ever witness.
As you ascend and descend this enigmatic island you will come across colorful villages, paddy fields, coconut palms, forest reserves, national parks, tea plantations and golden beaches. Along the journey you will also discover and admire the holy temples, monuments, statues, and colonial forts punctuating this beautiful island.

The Lanka Challenge is not for the faint hearted and insanity will definitively prevail! This is by no means an easy race; contestants will embark on a true test of character, a maker of men, a genuine test of resourcefulness, endurance and navigational stupidity. It is well known that auto rickshaws go fast and fall to pieces (luckily not very fast and not too many pieces), so prepare yourself to patch up your humble steed in the most extreme of weather conditions, marooned in the most remote locations and wearing the most ludicrous of outfits. Wacky Racers meets Super Mario Kart, tikka fuelled, under-prepared, over-confident and extra stupid.

The Organizers of this Crazy event say "Come and savor the true essence of this devilled island; admire the power of religion, absorb its captivating culture, engage with its charismatic people and learn its "machan" ways. We will ensure that your contributions leave a positive footprint on the local community and every one touched by this event."

... ummm yeah it looks awesome. dont get me wrong id love to do that, but the violence in sri lanka is so far from over. the cease fire is void completely. the government just claimed that the assasinated the head of the Tamil Tigers, the insurgent rebel force. yet they responded saying he is alive and well and theyll continue the fight. wouldnt go anywhere near sri lanka now, even tho this looks like a super cool adventure! |

... hahaha i was waiting for someone to come out with that. fair enough, i do apologise! it does seem a bit glass half empty doesnt it. but to be fair its just regarding sri lankan warlords and fidget house. on the topic though i really would be nervous. of all countries to go to right now i would say sri lanka would be in the top5 most dangerous. i dont know enough about whats going on in the rural areas but its a small island. and im not pessimistic about the trip either. i think it looks incredibly cool... as stated in my initial post! hearts you zets man! |

... You live in South Africa and you worried about travelling somewhere cause it "might" be dangerous ? if i was you i wouldnt leave teh house in case you "might" be knocked over by a car or get sun stroke ! |

... yes but in sri lanka i "might" be shot in the head by a militant terrorist organization that the US, UN and NATO are seriously concerned about and has devastated a country for years. that has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians and is currently one of the most war torn regions on the planet, but yeah... sunstroke... what a killer. whatever the point is dead, im a horrible pessimist. i was merely pointing out that right now its a scary place to visit. im not taking away anything from the beauty or magnificance of the trip, id love to go. but... would you go to a rain forest in Iraq? or to thailand a 2 months ago? hmmmm.... |
