Chelsea vs Barcelona - The Champions League AftermathPosted by: Lorenzo Maggels in Sports on May 07, 2009 Tagged in: Untagged

The aftermath of last nights game has been as furious as the onscreen raging that saw the referee escorted from the field. Calls of ‘conspiracy’ from Guus Hiddink has the footballing world asking all sorts of questions as people hope justice is served on those who turned a promising prospect of a match between two powerhouses from the glory of football to the cries of scandal.
The Uefa champions’ league semi-final was riddled with controversy as Barcelona knocked Chelsea out of the competition with a late equaliser form the Magnificent Andres Iniesta. The game had been tightly contested for the entire game with Barcelona dominating possession and Chelsea with the most attempts on goal. Iniesta’s winner was Barcelona’s first shot on goal. This magnificent strike was the reply Barca needed for the wonder goal from Essien that had put Chelsea ahead in the eight minute. But despite these wondrous strikes, it was a far crueller side of football that was to steal the show at Stamford Bridge.
Referee Tom Henning Overbo, from the ‘Tippeligaen’ in Norway, made some calls that that proved influential to the demise of Chelsea’s champions’ league aspirations, as well as calling into question UEFA’s administrative choices. Overbo had previously been a Uefa referee at the Euro 2008 and was relieved from the remainder of his tournament duties for making an absolute blunder of the Romania vs. Italy fixture. How can Uefa put a referee in charge of a match of such magnitude, that has only ever refereed 10 Champions league games in his career, and was previously disciplined for a nightmare UEFA match previously? Hindsight maybe 20/20 vision, but you have to think that a game with two great sides is going to be tight, and a weak ref will always jeopardise the credibility of such a fixture. Guss Hiddink has gone so far as to propose that Uefa did not want an all English final because it compromised the standard of Football in Europe? We will never know. I don’t think the game could have been thrown, but why did the linesman not intervene and make decisions in some instances where it might have been ‘harder’ for Overbo to call?
It’s a tough pill to swallow for Chelsea supporters and it seems that with the world rooting for Barcelona, the injustice of the situation is overlooked. Many neutrals have commented that Chelsea were done in, but with a Barca win their desired outcome they don’t give two hoots in the end. That sort of consolation just doe not quite cover the hurt of being robbed of a place in the champions’ league final. Overbo from the Norwegian ‘Tippeligaen’ was way out of his depth and for that Chelsea have paid the price. In fact, name three sides in the ‘Tippeligaen’ (without google) and I’ll retract such sentiments!

I accept that some of the players were out of line to bombard the officials, but at the end of a game when you have seen your season’s aspirations crumble at the hands of a horrific referring display; emotions are going to run high. I hold Ballack more to blame than Drogba for his on pitch assault of the Norwegian, Ballack should have got red, but why didn’t he? Was the ref compromising for something?

I was totally devastated by the loss and needed this space to vent some of my anguish. Chelsea sided it may be, but any sane soccer fan should be able to feel for the way Chelsea were removed from their dreams of lifting the Champions League. Hope the boys can pick themselves up. They really did so well, containing an attacking legacy like Barcelona to one shot, creating more on their way, playing marvellously and coming short to the hands of Fate… not for the first time.
CHELSEA FOREVER

... a devastatingly appauling piece of football, a true tragedy in any sense of the word. from an outsiders perspective it should have been at least 3-1. from a chelsea fans perspective it should have been at least 5-1. was so so so gutted at this and it completely taints the final. one of the teams should without fail; not be there and alas they are making the final lose all credibility in my eyes. i dont blame drogba for a second. you spend your whole year building up to that point only to be denied by some skinhead scandanavian twat. i appluad him for not swatting him through the face. |

... You have a point lorenzo, its not entirely the ref's fault. For the two last hand ball appeals the ref looked strait at the lines man to check if they felt it was a penalty but the linesmen kept their flags down. I feel the final shout in extra time was not a penalty because it hit (eto i think) in the armpit/shoulder, but the previous one with Pique should have been. I feel Malouda goes down to easy and because of that refs have to decide if he is diving before deciding if it is a foul or not. Similar to how Drogba/Ronaldo and Arjen Robben used to be. I applaud Barca for their incredible patience, If it was any other side in the world they would have atleast had a few more pot shots ect. They DOMINATED the possesion of the game with their beautiful quick passing and cautious approach. I was not until extra time that Barca took their fist composed on target shot to sink the blues. I felt that Chelse did a great job containg Eto, as he hardly featured, and nearly did a good enough job on Messi but unfortunatley for The Guus, it was the little genius who provided the winning pass. With regards to Guus Hiddink i think he has done a great job, and Chelsea will do well to sign him permanently next year. Plus he was Romans idea so if he has a bad patch he wont get fired strait away. Chelsea are getting closer to their illusive 1st champions league trophy, but i think it will take at least another 3 years for them to get it. I think Cheslsea should have finished off Barca in open play, Drogba missed a sitter that oscar pretorious would have finished. I am just glad it was Essien and not Terry who cost that last goal, i dont think he would have been able to cope mentally after his "slip up" in last years final Come on Roman, just buy more over price players thats the answer... |

... sure the ref was bad but for chelsea to know go and imply that it is some kind of conspiracy is just ridiculous!! he also made some shocking decisions in chelsea's favour, especially sending off abidal and if it had been barca who got knocked out then they would've been the ones complaining.. the fact is, chelsea should have finished the game off even without the help of the penalties.. they were a man up for the last 20 minutes and still sat back.. sure, this was a game plan which they executed brilliantly for 182 minutes but that one little lapse of concentration from essien (who is my favourite chelsea player by MILES and scored one of the best goals i've ever seen) cost against a side who, to be honest, plays the most attractive football i've ever seen!! now usually, i'm an anti-chelsea supporter but given the fact that my ever opinionated chelsea friends were far far away i could watch the game from a far more neutral perspective and what a game it was to watch!! firstly essien's goal was disgusting.... honestly the best goal of the season and he is one player who always makes africa proud! (drogba on the other hand is an embarrassment, but we'll come back to that) then it was beauty against the beast.. and i don't mean beast in a bad way, i myself am a defender and i couldn't help but admire the brilliant organisation and ferosity of the chelsea defence and this gave them a great platform off which to counter-attack and they should've scored more than once!! barca's fluent football is an absolute joy to watch with their quick, short passing and running game being second to none.. nevermind the quality of their touch! and then to finish it off with another cracking goal in the 93rd minute made it another classic game of the season.. it's a hard pill to swallow boys and we've all had to do it many times but this is the nature of football and in the end the side who played the better brand of football throughout the 2 legs won.. i'm not saying the ref wasn't an idiot but that's all i've heard about, no one has mentioned what a brilliant game of football it was.. quality attack, quality defence, brilliant goals, controversy, emotion, monkey's running around on the field afterwards... it was brilliant! and once again ballack and drogba proved unequivocally that they are two of the biggest pricks in football.. their egos know no bounds!! now, i understand the emotion of football and i can't begin to imagine the disappointment of going out like that in a CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SEMI FINAL but there was a whole squad of chelsea players who were just as disappointed and you didn't see them acting like little children! take for example JT and frank the 2 most chelsea-or-die people in the world... they had their little go at the ref but they kept their dignity and probably made him feel like even more of an idiot! and the way the captain has handled it in the press has also been impressive.. pepe guardiola was staring down the barrel of being knocked out when it looked like barca had no chance and he still had time to have a laugh and put his arm around guus.. now that's a good oke! i've heard many a chelsea supporter complain about ballack and drogba's attitudes so don't try and justify it now just because of the major disappointment... ok, i'm rambling a bit now so i'm sorry chelsea boys, i truly am.. that must have been horrible for you.. and i 100% agree that the ref was shit and they should never use refs without the pedigree for these massive fixtures.. i think UEFA has learnt their lesson! but what a game to watch over both legs! man u vs barca is gonna be a SICK final to watch! |

... a) barca did dominate possesion huge b) rarely a soccer game doesnt go by with one of the sides believing the ref was shit c) drogba is a cry baby and was put in the wrong body(should have been a little fagile girl not a towering african man) d) ballack should get the shit fined out of him for the embaressing way he acted on the pitch e) last but not least.... COME ON BARCELONA. THE BOYS ARE GONNA TAKE IT HOME |

... now that i have cooled down considerably after the game i feel i can make a respectable comment... It is a very sad day, when a ref and bad behavior are spoken about more than the terrific game that we witnessed. i think we saw the game played at its very best by two of the best teams in the world, yet someone named Overbo seems to be the star of the show!? Result aside, that ref was a shocker, from the red card to the 4 penalty calls... that bald bastard had a nightmare! and did indeed rob chelsea of a deserved result! As for Ballack and Drog's, yes it looked terrible, yes it sets a bad example and yes they should indeed be fined... but, i dont think anyone has the right to criticize them! i have seen many of you behaving much worse on football field for the dips! Passion, loss, heartache, all powerful emotions and they became overwhelmed by them. i know they are good, but proof at least that they are human but down to what matters... the game, or should we say joga bonita? barca are voted by many as the best team in the world, the attractive style of play, the big name players etc. well in my opinion chelsea showed them up big time... at the camp nou, the best attacking team tried tirelessly yet could not break down an epic chelsea defence, messi hid on the sideline and chelsea out muscled barca, out thought barca and got a decent result.. on to the bridge, i dont care how much a team passes the ball around that does not mean they dominated! left to right, back forward and nothing, not one breach(until the end)... chelsea had numourous chances and were the only team that actually looked like scoring with the possesion they had! once again messi did not feature, he was at no stage a factor and even his assist was really nothing special, he got so lucky! so yes loosing is a hard pill to swallow, but we did and i accept that... but i stand firm that chelsea were indeed the better team, be it a bad ref or bad missed chances the blues got extremely unlucky... the made a team that put 6 past real madrid look about as threatening as an arsenal u16 team! so i am prouder than ever to be a blue and next year we try again... and to the liverpool supporters, no worries, no offence will be taken to anything said here... losing in the semi must have left a sour taste |
