... who would have thought that when we all curled up in bed last night we would awake to utter pandemonium.people were crowding the streets staring in disbelief as the mountain went up in flames. Many vredehoek residents had to be evacuated and many more prayed that the fire would not jump to Their roof, get to their house their car their life really! the swift response of the cape town fire and rescue department and the action by the police and many residents who went above the call of duty, saved many homes and lives. They were outstanding!! we can be very thankful that we have such skilled and hardworking men and woman in our city. I took a walk this morning above high cape and it is incredible how close the fire really came to burning down rows of houses.I spoke to a resident there who said he had spent the night on his roof spraying down the roofs and gardens in his complex. Many more had taken stands outside their properties with buckets hosepipes etc they stood alongside fire personal in the fight to save their properties. |

... just read that the fire has been ablaze for a few days but was not spreading and was very small! it was the wind that caused the chaos yesterday... as i understand the source was in the vacintity of rhodes memorial... dont know if it true but that is the latest i could find! |

... Just imagine how much more devastating it would've been if the wind was howling? My guess is that smokers caused the blaze...never really understood how flames are able to just ignite from nothing more than the sun's heat and some wind. Either way, big ups to the Fire Dept. |
