Taxi Rage in Cape Town - Rioting in Adderley StreetPosted by: Maggels in Cape Town News on Dec 09, 2008 Tagged in: Untagged

Once again the law has been taken into the hands of her 'fair' citizens... and once again the chosen tactic is violence.
For anyone heading into town and the vicinity of Adderley Street today you would have been in for a big surprise: but today the teddy bears are not picnicking but rather taxi drivers are taking violent measures to ensure that their trade is getting the adequate protection it deserves.
An Alive member took a cab home last night and was met by a disgruntled taxi driver who shed light on the forthcoming riots. It seems that many workers are stumbling in from the deeper darker realms of Africa and running their own private taxi services, unlicensed, and stealing the business from those who are legalized by the traffic bureau and its regulations. With rumors of up to 1000 taxi’s moving party people from long street on weekend evenings, these legal taxi drivers are fed up with the loss in revenue as they are losing business to the ‘alien’ cab that are flocking to the hot spots.
And with this anger came the riots that waged on in Adderley Street today. Eye witness reports have claimed nothing but ‘sheer mayhem’! Allegedly the morning started with complete destruction of any cabs running under false pretenses without the presence of police anywhere.-The same police who are not present in administering checks on Long Street to fine these ‘alien’ cabs n the first place. Another witness claimed to have seen a ‘taxi shoot through a red light with passengers dangled out of windows and on the roof, chased by an entourage of police vehicles’ who must have arrived as the chaos and rioting ensued.
The pandemonium is waging on and the gripe of these cab drivers has surely been heard, however this raises another question… is South Africa turning to violence all too often to solve its issues? Recall the xenophobic attacks?!?!? Violence used to solve the plight of the workers whose jobs were being ‘stolen by immigrants. Could we forget our ANC youth league leader threatening to take arms in support of Zuma. What’s next… shooting the barmen for an over-priced beer? Drastic you might say, but you get my drift. It’s the snowball effect I’m concerned about here. Let’s, as South Africans, try and solve this violent problem solving agenda. The question obviously is…. HOW?
